Rama's Revenge

In the school day in Ram's school
The headmaster for its successes has worked all tools
But Rama was not in his good books
So on him Rama decided to try a trick.

All the parents of students had gathered
Lights where brilliantly lit in stage
The chief guest had arrived
And headmaster thought successes guaranteed.

It was Rama's task to sing the prayer
So all people stood-up
But instead he sang the National Anthem
So audience left thinking it was end of program.

PROGRAM PROCESS DESCRIPTION

Step 1. Apply to the Program - Interested innovators should apply to participate in the Program using the on-line application form.

Step 2. First Screening - Applications are evaluated to select the top 60 innovations. The 60 selectees are invited to participate in a Commercialization Strategy Workshop.

Step 3. Commercialization Strategy Workshop - Top 60 innovators are invited to attend a 3-day Commercialization Strategy Workshop at the FICCI campus in Delhi. Specific dates are to be determined.

Step 4. Second Screening - The top 30 innovations are selected from the group of 60. These innovators will receive a professional assessment of their innovation, and will be invited to attend the Entrepreneurship Workshop.

Step 5. Each innovator receives a QuickLook assessment, prepared by the professional staff members of the IC2 Institute.

Step 6. Entrepreneurship Workshop - The top 30 innovators attend an intensive workshop that will guide them through 6 key areas of entrepreneurship. Dates and venues are to be determined.

Step 7. DST-Lockheed Martin Innovation Competition - The top 30 innovators present their innovations to a panel of judges made of up of renowned technologists and commercialization experts from India and the United States. At the end of the competition, six Gold Medal Innovators, and six Silver Medal Innovators will be named.

Step 8. Business Development - Gold & Silver Medal Innovators will receive professional business development services from FICCI and IC2 Institute to assist them in developing their global marketing strategies.

Step 9. Global Markets - Innovators connect with new global partners.


Evaluation Criteria

In accordance with the stated objectives of the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum, proposals are evaluated in a peer review process in both India and US according to the following criteria:


  • Scientific merit


  • Degree of significance to its field of study


  • Level of creativity and innovativeness in the approach.

  • Feasibility of the approach


  • Appropriateness of the proposed principal investigators and other involved individuals


  • Involvement of young scientists


  • Contribution to scientific and technological capacity-building in both US and India Potential to generate follow-on interactions and collaborations

Q. What is the DST-Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Program?

A. The DST-Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Program is a two-year, nation-wide project, created to enhance the growth and development of India's entrepreneurial economy. The Program is equally funded by Department of Science and Technology(Gov of India) and Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company, and was developed with the assistance of the Indo- US Scinece and Technology Forum, the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas, and FICCI.

A. Any Indian group or organization with a promising new technology is encouraged to apply to participate in the program. Complete the online application at www.IndiaInnovates.in. Program participation will be based on a competitive selection process.

A. The cost of the program is equally funded by DST and Lockheed Martin. Participants pay for only for their own travel-related expenses.

A. Top selectees receive personalized business development services from FICCI & the IC2 Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. Terrific Discovery: India Finds Water On Moon

Friday, September 25, 2009: The decades-long debate is over now and it is confirmed that the polar regions of the Moon has water. Built, launched and operated by the Indian Space Research Organization, Chandrayaan-1 has found water on the lunar surfaces. India's first moon mission Chandrayaan-1 was launched with the prime objective of finding traces of water on the lunar surface besides mapping minerals and chemicals on the Moon. With over 24 hrs of speculations, NASA has confirmed the presence of water molecules in the polar regions of the moon, in its press conference.

structure that surpasses Rashtrapati Bhavan in size and equals it in grandeur.
With a floor area of more than 9.6 lakh square feet, the new structure, designed by architect Hafiz Contractor,
will house the second unit of the Global Education Centre (GEC) where all Infosys employees will undergo training
before taking up their placements.
For comparison, the floor area of the Rashtrapati Bhavan is 2 lakh square feet as per the official website of the President. The GEC has been designed entirely on classical style of architecture with similarities to the Colosseum of Rome, while the pillars are reflective of the Parliament House.
A large dome emerges from the centre of the structure and overlooks the entire campus and the structure reflects various ancient Greek and Roman architectural style all of which will
cost around Rs. 350 crore.

Indian-led group finds way to measure neutron stars

MUMBAI: After Chandrayaan-1's discovery of water molecules on the Moon comes another astronomy breakthrough for India. An international group lead by Sudip Bhattacharyya, a 36-year-old space scientist at Mumbai's Tata Institute of Fundamental research, has discovered a way to measure the size of neutron stars. Before we go any further, what is a neutron star? Speaking to TOI on Monday, Bhattacharyya explained: "To put it simply, it is the final stage of a very massive star. When the massive star burns up its fuel, it collapses to become a neutron star," he said, adding that there are between 100 million and 1,000 million neutron stars in the galaxy. On average, a neutron star is very small — approximately 10km in diameter — and 10,000 light years from Earth, thus making it extremely difficult to study and measure. Bhattacharyya and his team's research revealed the unsuspected property of X-ray bursts given off by the stars, which led to the discovery that the pattern of X-rays generated might reveal their true size. "Since these X-rays cannot reach the Earth because of a blanket created by the atmosphere, data was collected of more than 900 bursts from 43 neutron stars through a Nasa satellite and transmitted to us," Bhattacharyya said. The scientist and his colleagues — Coleman Miller of the University of Maryland and Galloway Monash of the University of Australia — modelled how the temperature of the bursts changed as they faded and found it varied in relation to the radius of the star. The team's research has been accepted for publication in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
